How To Find Free Quilt Patterns

Wednesday, July 6th, 2011

Throughout history, ladies who quilted have shared patterns, designs, tips and experience to others within their group. It was a way for women to get together in a social group without risking being accused of wasting time. Not only did they use their ‘social time’ to make items, quilts, which could be used or sold, but they manufactured them out of scrap material: small off-cuts of fabric which other people may call rags.

Women still do this today, especially in the mid-west. If you want to get into quilting, you could do a lot worse than become a member of a quilting club or group. Look in your local yellow pages or ask at a hobbyist shop.

If you have no source of free quilting patterns from a local club, try the Internet. If you use the search term ‘free quilting patterns’ in Google or Yahoo, you will see hundreds of choices. Some will be very suitable and others will be worthless and you will have to dig down to work out which are which.

If you are wondering why anyone should offer free quilting patterns, the reason is that they will want you to visit their web site to request it and your email address to supply it. This gives them all they require to send you promotional emails until you unsubscribe.

Monitor the emails they send you and if you do not like them, do not feel guilty about unsubscribing instantly, even if the free quilting patterns were pretty useful. You will not be hurting anyone’s feelings, no-one will even know who you are. It is all done automatically with programs called autoresponders.

Patterns that you will be offered in your task for free quilting patterns are usually the traditional ones that have passed into the public domain like the Lone Star, the Log Cabin and other traditional American patterns.

If you like the traditional quilting patterns this is all very well, but if you want something more contemporary and less well-known you will probably have to pay for it. The average price of a quilting pattern is somewhere around $25, but it can also be $10 more or less. EBay can be a good source of cheap quilting patterns.

However, do not give up on your quest for free quilting patterns too quickly because there definitely is a plethora of free quilting patterns on the Net, you only have to keep looking. Before you start, it would be worth creating a folder known as Quilt Patterns in your Favorites Folder. Then you can save any useful web sites in there so that you can return to them easily again.

Browsing for free quilting patterns, whether on the Internet or asking friends, is an agreeable aspect of the hobby of quilting, one that is certain to keep you engrossed for numerous hours.

Wide Fitting Shoes For Women – How Do They Help My Feet?

Tuesday, July 5th, 2011

Maybe you have thought about getting wide fitting shoes for women before. It seems like something has kept you from actually making that purchase for some reason.

If you are one of the women that only experience a little bit of pain when you are wearing your shoes you may not think that it is enough of a problem to start taking action. You should know that it is important for you to get shoes that are wider if you need them.

When you buy shoes that are wide you are not buying them because they are wide, you are buying them because they fit your feet correctly. It is extremely important that you get the right size of shoes or you are going to find yourself experiencing some serious foot problems.

While the serious foot problems may not come right away, you can be assured that they are just a short ways down the road if you continue to wear shoes that are narrow and your feet are about to explode out of your shoes. Even if you are just feeling a slight pinch and your toes are having to be smashed just a little bit, that is not a good sign and means that you need wide fitting shoes for women as soon as possible.

There are a lot of different widths when it comes to wide shoes. There are different charts online that can help you figure out which size of wide shoes you actually need for your feet.

When you find a shoe that fits your feet correctly you are going to be able to correct many problems. If you can walk without pain your posture will be helped and you will find that back problems will not progress as quickly either. The benefits to taking care of your feet and wearing the proper size of shoe really are limitless. It is time to make sure that you don’t sell your feet short.

You could have many reasons for not buying wide fitting shoes for women but whatever it is, it is not a good excuse and you should make sure that you have the right shoes on your feet.

Maybe you were worried that your feet would find out that you wear shoes that are wider than “normal” ones. You have no need to worry there since most of the time wide shoes are only about a quarter to a half inch wide which no one can notice.

Landscaping In The Texas Style

Sunday, July 3rd, 2011

Most people simply let their garden mature naturally in that they do not select a particular style. This is all right, but it can turn into a hodge-podge, if not looked after. Some people, though, deliberately choose to landscape their garden according to a clear style or a theme. Some of these themes are very sophisticated and others are fairly simple.

One of the many themes to pick from is the Texas Style. We all know that everything in Texas is done on a grand scale, so you would be excused for thinking that landscaping in the Texas Style would require a huge garden.

It is possibly easier to carry out your landscaping in the Texas Style in a larger garden, but it just depends how you go about it.

The first things to remember are that Texas is very hot and so the terrain closely resembles wilderness. Plants and shrubs are thin on the ground, so to speak. Landscaping in the Texas Style is what you could call minimalist gardening.

You will have to make use of every square inch of your property, if you only have a small plot and the climate will have to be fairly warm in the daytime although it is good if it gets cold at night. This will allow you to grow many of the plants that thrive or at least grow in Texas. One good thing about Texan flowers is that when they do blossom, they really do show a lot of colour.

One of the kinds of plant that you are sure to have success with is the cactus. There are many varieties of cactus, so you should not have too much difficulty finding several kinds that will grow in your garden in order to produce a Texan dry climate look, as long as it does not rain every other day where you reside.

Cacti produce magnificent flowers when they blossom, but they have big thorns, so if you have young children, the Texas Style garden may not be for you for a few years yet.

Once you have your plants sorted out, you can begin looking for accessories. You can pick up ideas from the old cowboy films and from magazines, but a few recommendations are: a chow wagon style barbecue area with a canvas hood; some broken wagon wheels; a well, functioning or not (it could even be a fish pond that looks like a well); boulders and wooden fence posts.

Boulders are usually overlooked by gardeners but there are some fascinating stones, boulders and rocks in all sorts of shapes and colours. Boulders with fossils in them are fantastic conversation pieces. Smaller rocks can be used to create a rock garden and this will increase the range of plants that you can grow in your Texas Style garden. You will be able to plant succulents, small cacti and other small plants that frequently grow in this austere environment.

Lighting should be low and subtle so that you can see the stars at night. You could even have a camp fire with log seating or you can accomplish this effect by using low powered solar lighting. Solar powered lighting will also preclude you from having to have an electrician wire up your garden.

When you have finished landscaping in the Texas Style, do not forget to get pleasure from it by eating outside as often as you can. Barbecues, steaks and Texmex food are the order of the day.

How To Pick The Best Material For Your Sewing Project

Sunday, July 3rd, 2011

Up until fifty years ago, the vast majority of women knew how to sew. All the women that I knew as a child sewed and knitted and manufactured some of the clothes for me and my four brothers. When I was eight or nine, I and each other child in my class was taught the fundamentals of knitting and before I went off to college, my mother taught me how to take up my jeans, sew on patches and repair my clothes.

Unfortunately, sewing, knitting and repairing clothes has largely died out in the United Kingdom. I now live in Thailand and I do not see much evidence of sewing or knitting here, so I assume that these arts are dying out all over the world among the masses, although I am certain that there are individuals everywhere who still knit and sew.

It is a real shame. If you are going to make your own clothes or furnishings like cushions, pillows or soft toys, it is quite essential that you choose the right fabric for the job. Using the wrong fabric will make your task harder and may even render your work worthless. So here are a few tips on choosing the correct cloth for the task in hand.

The first and most obvious thing to do is look at the suggestions on the pattern you are using and if you are a novice take that advice until you know what you are doing. Regrettably, a lot of people do not read the directions anymore. I can not remember the number of times I have seen someone struggling to assemble something and discovered the directions in the bin with the packaging.

Get to know textiles by examining the fabrics in the shop. Ask questions about fabrics and look at the cloth on the bolt or roll. If the fabric does not look correct on the bolt it probably will not look correct anywhere else either. When you unroll a couple of feet of the bolt, does it lie flat or does it roll up or crumple? Grab a handful and squeeze it. Does it crease easily? Does it feel correct?

Is the fabric fraying on the bolt? If so it will fray whilst you use it too. Look on the bolt for special cleaning or handling directions. Do they suit your requirements?

It is quite a problem to work with satin because it slips easily. T-shirt knit is also a problem because it rolls up on itself. It is almost certainly best to avoid these materials until you gain some experience

Cotton is the best fabric for beginners because it is easy to work with and everyone is very familiar with cotton goods. We know how they should feel and we can tell good, thick heavy cotton from cheap, thin cotton. We also all know that cotton shrinks. Therefore before you cut you cloth. wash it and cut the shrunken cotton fabric. In effect, you have pre-shrunk it.

The Basics Of Making Quilts

Tuesday, June 28th, 2011

If you have never done any quilting before, you may be forgiven for thinking that it looks fairly simple. The fact is that it necessitates a lot of patience, skill and diligence to create a quilt. It really is not as simple as it looks. It takes practice and attention to detail. Given that, you must use good quality textiles if you are considering manufacturing a quilt.

Cotton is all right for the task, but it ought to be the lowest you will go. No polyester or other man-made textiles. If you do use these cheap textiles and spend weeks constructing your first quilt, you will simply regret it. If you make mistakes, but the cloth is decent at least there will be that one saving grace.

Once you have chosen your cloth, you can choose the style or design that you want. This may seem backwards, and that is OK. If you want, you can choose the style first and then a cloth to match, but I would recommend that you just stick with cotton for your first quilt.

Next, you have to get hold of a pattern. This is very easy. You can either join a local quilting group, where people will give you traditional patterns or sell you modern ones; or you can go on line and search Google or Yahoo for ‘free quilt patterns’ or you can go to your local craft shop and buy one that suits your requirements.

You will also require a good set of tools to make your quilt. It is a good idea not to scrimp on these tools as they are not costly; will make your job a lot easier and will last a very long time. You will need at least one rotary cutter. ‘At least one’ because the large blade cutters are very good for straight cuts whereas a small blade cutter is better for corners or shapes. By the way, these rotary cutters look like pizza cutters.

Because these cutters are sharp, you will also require a cutting board. This can be as simple as a sheet of plywood, trimmed to suit your table top or you can merely lay it on the floor. Without a board, you will damage your table or carpet. You will also need dress-maker’s scissors and large shears. Further requirements are pins, needles, cotton, straight edges and markers.

Your pattern will explain about batting and a back fabric and you should pay a great deal of attention to the suggestions in your pattern.

This piece cannot be a ‘teach yourself quilting’ manual, but I hope that it has shown you that you do not need a great amount of equipment to make very passable bedding quilts. However, with just a little adaptation of the pattern, you could make some beautiful duvet covers. Not many people make duvet covers, so you could either make them solely for yourself or sell them.

The History Of The Cushion

Friday, June 10th, 2011

In American phraseology, the words ‘cushion’ and ‘pillow’ are virtually synonymous, but in the remainder of the English speaking world, a pillow is used on a bed for supporting the head and a cushion is used on elsewhere for supporting other parts of the body. A pillow is usually much larger than a cushion these days.

The cushion and pillow were most likely first used by wealthy Asian men to rest on. They would probably be referred to as throw cushions nowadays. However, we are going back so far in history that dyes and textiles were very expensive, so pillows and cushions were only for the wealthy and the patterns were so intricate that they became pieces of art in themselves.

Needlework became a skilled profession as did weaving. Cushions were large sacks or cases filled with feathers, hair, wool, straw or something equivalent. These days they are more likely to be filled with man-made fibres such as polyester. Down is the most costly filling especially down from the eider duck.

Due to international trade, the idea of the cushion started moving westward and had arrived in Egypt by the time of the Pharaohs. Cushions have been found in ancient Egyptian tombs. By the Middle Ages, cushions were to be seen in all the royal palaces of Europe. Cushions were still regarded as representing wealth.

The cushions of the royal palaces were substantial enough to sit in, a bit like modern beanie bags, and even started replacing traditional chairs. In those days, cushions were very substantial sacks manufactured of leather, many of which had needlework designs on them.

Cushions were also used in churches for the rich to kneel on when saying their prayers. These special but small cushions were known as carreaux because they were square (from the French).

These days cushions are everyday objects because they are much cheaper. Most cushions in the West are 17 inches by 17 inches and the reason for this is the traditional size of a roll or bolt of fabric. A roll of cloth is traditionally 54 inches wide, so it could be cut into three pieces of 18 inches, allowing for seams, this permits the manufacturer to make a 17 inch cushion.

Japanese cushions were much larger and still are, but they have a different role. In the West they are used for support, whereas in the East they are used for sitting on on the floor. In Japanese they are called ‘zabuton’ and measure 20-30 inches square by a few of inches in thickness, which is less than a quarter of the thickness of traditional Western cushions.

Zen meditators will frequently sit on another special cushion called a zafu or meditation cushion, which is placed on top of the zabuton. A zafu can be round or square but is small, frequently just 8-10 inches in diameter and 4-8 inches in thickness.

Zabuton are used in all aspects of Japanese life especially those facets that have religious overtones or traditions such as sumo. Spectators of the sport will sit on zabuton while watching the bouts. If there is a foul or a dispute, spectators often throw their zabuton into the ring in disgust.

The Importance Of Good Clothing

Tuesday, June 7th, 2011

One of the strangest social or cultural phenomena since the Second World War is the change in criteria which individuals use to purchase garments. For thousands of years before then, people wanted the best possible clothing that they could get and one of the criteria that they used to judge each other was their dress sense or the quality of their clothes.

This all started to change in the Seventies when it became more significant to not be seen wearing the same article too often, so it became more desirable to have five cheap shirts that would not last long than to have one high quality shirt that would last for years. How did this shift in principles come about?

The most obvious people to blame are the fashion designers (or their imitators) and the advertisers. Individuals without much money to spend on clothes do not like to be seen in the same blue shirt on every other occasion, they would rather have several colours, but perhaps these individuals do not understand the difference in the quality.

The quality of one’s clothing is vital as most women and about half as many men know. First impressions count and bright and cheerful (but cheap) is not as impressive to those who know the difference as quality.

To those who say that the person ought to matter over the clothing, I would say ‘Yes, in an ideal world. One day, but it is not the way it works now’. Why do people dress up for a date, and particularly the first date? Why do individuals dress up for an interview? And why do people dress up to go to court?

It is because clothing matters and first impressions count and deep down, we all know it even though most of us wish that it did not matter so much.

First of all, it is important to find a style that suits you. Then you should purchase items of clothing that are decent examples of that style. They will not be cheap, but is a Hell’s Angel’s leather jacket cheap? Certainly not. Whatever niche you think you fit into or want to fit into, purchase the appropriate clothing to stand out for quality.

I am not saying that people have to dress appropriate to their age group, I am saying that people ought to dress appropriate to the upper echelons of their niche group. If you would like to be a Hell’s Angel, get one of the best leather jackets and if you would like to work in an office, buy yourself a decent suit. Just because you cannot see the difference between a cheap one and a decent one does not mean that your peers cannot as well.

You just have so much opportunity to transform your physical appearance, but you can still make a big impression by wearing quality clothing like a decent overcoat, a decent suit, a good cardigan or a decent shirt. The people who know the difference will notice and it will not hurt your prospects.

How To Refurbish The Children’s Bedroom

Tuesday, May 10th, 2011

Are you thinking of upgrading your children’s bedroom? Have they grown out of it or even wrecked it? Whatever the reason, it has to be done from time to time as your children grow up and have new needs or just require different size furniture. The first things to decide are how much you want to spend and whether you want any contribution from your children.

The answer to the first question, only you can know, but I would like to say that it can be great fun, a real eye-opener and a good bond-forger to have your children in on the decision-taking and the redecoration as well.

Well, OK, the redecoration depends on their ages, but they can help strip off the old paper even if they are too young to help with the painting.

I will presume that you are going to seek your children’s advice. Positively do not take them to the shop first off and hope that you will get sensible answers. The best approach is to discuss what they want and then show pictures on the Internet.

take plenty of notes and make sure the kids understand that they have agreed to their choices. The same with the colour scheme.

Attempt to steer them away from dreary, drab, dark colours. Most kids like primary colours anyway – yellow, blue and red – so you should not have a difficulty here. Curtains and seat covers should be washable at home, not in a dry cleaners.

Strive to get fire-resistant fabrics. If you are concerned about nightly accidents or simple spillages, you could get a few of mattress protection covers too.

As far as the furniture itself goes, you ought to purchase the best you can afford. Check the joints and attempt not to buy anything that is nailed or stapled. You want furniture that is bolted or screwed together because it is more resilient. You do not need me to tell you that children rock on chairs and bounce on beds.

If your children require a computer table, it can be a decent idea to have it bracketed to the wall or floor so that it cannot be accidentally tipped over, breaking the monitor. Substantial bean bag cushions are always a good idea too. They add colour, mirth and a comfortable place to read.

Children of all ages leave items lying about, so put a laundry basket in a corner somewhere and if the children are young, a toy box somewhere else. There should be cupboards and shelves, which is all that older children will need. Make certain that there are plenty of them and then there can be no excuses for untidiness.

You might also want to supply a small dustpan and brush as a hint that you expect your children to clean up small accidents themselves. You never know, they may get the idea.

Modern And Traditional Home Interior Decorating Ideas

Sunday, May 8th, 2011

If you are considering redecorating your home, you are probably looking around for some home interior decorating ideas. Redecorating presents a good chance to express yourself by showing your style and interests. You do this by matching colours, textiles, styles and artwork. The combinations of possibilities in home interior decorating are really infinite. No two houses ever have look the same by accident.

It would be easy to redecorate and adopt any home interior decorating ideas if money were not a restraint. Therefore, the challenge for most people is how to redecorate the home within a budget. You can get home interior decorating ideas from the many interior design items on TV or by buying a couple of the home interior design magazines. The difficulty with the magazines, more so than with the TV programmes, is that they tend to show ideas that price thousands of dollars.

The Internet is another source of realistic home interior decorating ideas that ordinary people can afford. The prices of the objects used in the Net displays are usually a lot more affordable as well. The Net is also a good way of comparing the various broad-swathe styles. Styles such as country, modern, traditional, Mediterranean, Provencal, minimalist et cetera.

If you like the older styles such as country, primitive, Provencal or traditional, darker, warmer colours are best. These colours go well with fabrics and old (style), wooden furniture. Wall hangings, paintings of country scenes, curtains and plenty of throw cushions are part of this style of interior design. Autumn colours go well together to produce a warm, friendly, cozy atmosphere.

Modern, minimalist and Mediterranean styles tend to use brighter colours whites and off-whites like magnolia are de rigeur. Home interior decorating ideas for these styles include a lack of clutter and plenty of open space and light. The walls should have one or two pieces of art rather than the six to ten of the older styles. leather furniture goes well here: white or black, with one contrasting throw cushion per seating place. A white cushion on a black sofa or visa-versa.

However, there is nothing wrong with you mixing these style. This often occurs anyway, especially if people give you furniture or you inherit it. if you try to blend different pieces of furniture which obviously from radically different styles, you will need something to bridge the gap between them, so to speak. This can be done most easily with fabrics such as throw cushions, wall hangings such as tapestries, rugs and carpets.

Throw cushions do not all have to match. In fact, in the old days it was very unlikely that all the cushions or pillows in a room would all match, because cushions were frequently made from off-cuts of fabric from other projects. A range of different throw cushions can help you combination styles quite easily. Another way, is to fill an old cabinet with more modern pieces of glass and china.

Dressing For A Change

Wednesday, April 20th, 2011

Have you come to the conclusion that you would like a change of image? Or would you just like to smarten yourself up a bit? Perhaps you have a new career with new colleagues and you would like to take this opportunity to dress a bit more elegantly. Occasionally people like to transform their image while they are searching for or have just found a new partner.

Whilst changing one’s image most individuals will focus on a new hair style and smarter clothes. Women might go for smart trouser suits or power dresses and men might decide to wear a lounge suit or a jacket and tie more frequently. If the weather is bad a costly overcoat always completes the image, particularly suede, cashmere or leather. It used to be that fur was de rigeur, but now it is duh.

However, there is another way of changing your image, a way that need not be that expensive, although sometimes it takes courage to try it. That is the wearing or the using of accessories. Women have more opportunity here in many ways, but men have options too.

Women can sport something in their new hair style; they can co-ordinate bags and shoes; they can wear a different kind of stockings or could begin wearing gloves, white kid, for example. They could modify the style of jewelery they wear and the colour or their hair and lipstick. Belts, brooches, watches and scarves can also serve the end of changing ones image. They could also wear a fresh flower on their lapel, in their hair or behind their ear for that old style gypsy look :-) (that is the brave one).

Men have a slightly harder time of it without looking daft, but men can wear better shoes, wear a tie more frequently or a costly watch. They could carry a briefcase and an umbrella, and wear a flower in their button hole, but this is where it begins to look a bit contrived. They could also wear a monocle, a pocket watch or a bow tie.

My cousin wears a monocle and once you overcome your first instinct to laugh, you have to admit that he looks quite elegant. The same is the case with bow ties, which he wears as well and insists on tying it by hand. He also carries an umbrella, a briefcase and wears pinstripes. He is very brave and he is noticed and remembered wherever he goes.

However, you do not need to go that far. Even simply wearing a bow tie instead of a tie will set you apart. Have you noticed that if you are talking to someone wearing a bow tie you cannot help yourself staring at it? It is the men’s equivalent of a woman’s low-cut dress.

Anyway, accessories are a less expensive way of altering your image than going out and buying a new wardrobe of outfits and they are more easily combined that different suits. Go for colours that combine easily, like blacks, greys, browns and off-whites. Understatement is usually better than garish.
