Celebrity Cruises

Wednesday, June 29th, 2011

Are you planning a pretty extraordinary vacation? Say to celebrate a special event like retirement or an anniversary? If you are, then you really should add a cruise to your shortlist of holidays to research more.

A cruise is a very extraordinary type of vacation, because you get to visit several locations and even several different countries during the length of your holiday.

It is a very relaxing sort of vacation because you have nothing to do except enjoy yourself between destinations. You do not even have to pack and unpack between destinations because your hotel takes you to your port of call not a bus or a car. Usually, the cruise liner has already docked when you wake up for breakfast.

After breakfast, you can decide whether to go ashore or not, as you like. Usually, the ship will have a couple of tours you can pick from or you can go it alone. You are told what time to get back on board, say 19:00 hours and when you go down to dinner, the liner will weigh anchor and head for the next port of call.

This routine will be repeated every day, but at a different port, although you do have a ‘day at sea’ on some cruises. This is not a bad thing as it allows you to spend all day relaxing and enjoying the motion of the ocean. Most cruise ships have lots to do during these days at sea.

Nearly all liners will have a cinema and special interest lectures or groups, some of which are led by guest celebrities. For instance, you may be interested in learning about wine. Well, there is normally a wine appreciation group on board or you might like to learn some of the history of the next port of call, especially if it has connections to an ancient civilization.

Food figures large on cruises. On my last cruise, we had: breakfast, elevenses, luncheon, high tea, dinner and a midnight feast. Breakfast, luncheon and dinner were equivalent to five course meals, but actually you could just consume as much as you wanted. In between the meals, there was room (or cabin) service.

Food was included in the cost of our cruise, but you had to buy alcoholic drinks, although they are free as well on all inclusive cruises. Luckily, cruise liners also have gyms, swimming pools and deck sports to help you try to keep the pounds off. I was unsuccessful at that and I gained two pounds for every week of the voyage, which I am told is around average.

After dinner, there is usually a cabaret, a piano bar and a night club going on somewhere and if you can remain awake, you can normally visit all three dos to find out which one suits you the best that evening. For me it was cabaret, night club and last drink in the piano bar before going to my cabin.

The sheet was always turned down with a sheaf of papers on my pillow explaining about the next port and the excursions available, which could be booked any time of the day or night by using the cabin phone. I would go again tomorrow.

401K Plans Demystified

Thursday, June 16th, 2011

You’re probably hoping to retire early if you’re like millions of other working Americans. You need to save enough money to pay several decades worth of expenses after retiring from your job in order to do this. Putting a portion of your earnings into a savings account is not the most financially wise option available, although it is an option. Familiarize yourself with a 401K to do that.

The main purpose of a 401K retirement savings plan is to allow a United States employee to plan for retirement by saving money. You’ll see the most benefit to a 401K plan when you look at it in terms of taxes. A portion of each paycheck you receive has taxes taken out by the federal and state government. You’ll obviously see some of this returned to you after you file your annual taxes, but its immediate impact is making saving for retirement a little more difficult on you. Because money you designate to be put automatically into a 401K retirement plan isn’t actually available for you to earn or spend, it has the added benefit of current income tax deferral until you withdraw it later.

After employees have worked someplace a specific amount of time, many employers offer 401K retirement plans. Incentives are often offered to encourage employees to start saving for retirement. Matching a certain percentage of the money you put into your 401K out of your total paycheck is a popular option for employers. 10% is sometimes as high as employers will match. Receiving money for free is essentially what this is akin to. The option should be considered if you’re an employee who wants a quick and easy way to save for your retirement.

The money you put into your 401K is invested into different other companies. The more diversified your investments, the safer the risk is assumed to be. If one investment’s value drops, it only affects a small portion of your overall 401K savings, if you’ve diversified properly. You can also invest in real estate via an EFT (Exchange Traded Fund) or an REIT (Real Estate Investment Trusts), if you have an interest.

You can probably see how the 401K retirement plan can benefit you by helping add to your retirement savings. With employers often offering matching incentives and the myriad of different areas in which you can choose to invest your 401K money, there are a lot of options available. You may have more detailed questions, and in that case, you should consider consulting a financial advisor.

Baby Boomer Retirement

Friday, May 6th, 2011

There was a huge rise in the birth rate after the Second World War. These babies were nicknamed the Baby Boomers and they are the babies born between around 1946 and 1960. This means that the first Baby Boomers became pensioners in 2011 at the age of 65.

It should be noticed that when the first Baby Boomers came of age, they created the changes in civil and human rights and discrimination linked with 1968. They also fashioned the Hippy Movement, Flower Power and the Sexual Revolution. So what will happen when they get to be pensioners?

The Baby Boomer generation is the richest generation ever, but they have never felt the drop in income, status, health and mobility associated with older age, so it is likely that there will be some sort of pensioners’ pressure group.

About 22% of the American population are Boomers, which means that there will be tens of millions of people retiring over the following ten years. This has a number of vital consequences. The first one is for health care; the mass retirement could or almost certainly will put the health care system under massive pressure.

The second one is employment. Because the Boomers’ generation is the largest section of society, when they retire, there will be a shortage of labour. After all, if the Boomer generation is the biggest portion of society, then by definition the following generation must be smaller.

These figures are roughly the same for all Western countries and it almost certainly accounts for why there is a rush in Western countries to allow immigration. Firstly, immigrants will take up the slack in the workplace and second, their taxes will help pay for all the old Boomers.

So, hopefully, neither the state finances nor the Boomers’ health will suffer, but what other effects may this mass retirement have? Well, there could easily be a huge increase in demand for retirement homes both in one’s native country and abroad. Baby boomers are prolific travellers and many might want to retire to warmer countries or warmer parts of their country.

The southern states, provinces or counties of Western countries in the northern hemisphere and warmer countries in general, like Thailand, Spain and Italy could see a growth in retirement housing. The construction industry might get a much needed shot in the arm.

Most Western governments and many private construction firms already have plans and even active projects to satisfy this need for retirement housing when it begins to kick in. If the Boomers make a mass migration out of the cities into the countryside or to the seaside, it could free up millions of inner city dwellings and at the same time create lots of construction work outside the cities. But not just that, millions of extra jobs will be created in support and service staff positions.

The aging of the Baby boomers could be just the kick start that most deteriorating Western economies need to get back on their feet after the banking crisis of 2008-2010. Let’s hope so.

Ways To Help You Enjoy Your Retirement

Thursday, May 5th, 2011

People regard retirement in different ways. Those who have saved or invested enough to be able to make the most of their retirement in style usually look forward to giving up the daily grind, whereas those who have not saved are usually not looking forward to it. However, there is another group of people who span both of these groups who do not want to retire either.

It is not because they do not have enough money, it is because they are frightened that they will not have enough to do. This is a real pity, but it is normally evidence of an over-concentration on one’s career and not enough other interests outside work.

Here are a few pointers to help you prepare yourself to enjoy your retirement.

Do not regard retirement as the end of your useful life. Yes, it probably was for your father or grandfather, but it does not have to be for you because individuals live longer nowadays. Your grandfather almost certainly only had six or seven years after retirement, but you could have twenty or more. If you still want to work, you can, either for someone else or for yourself.

Broaden your circle of friends and interests or hobbies. Five to ten years before you retire, start an interest that has absolutely nothing to do with your job – archery, ballooning, deep sea fishing, marathon running, bridge or embroidery, anything, but be willing to fill the gap that losing the nine to five will create.

Many retirees become far less active than they were when working. This not good, so plan to take up a replacement activity like gardening, rambling, swimming, sailing or golf. In fact, anything to keep those pounds from piling on just at the time of your life when they can do the most damage. If you do not like the idea of taking up an active hobby, modify your diet and walk for thirty minutes every morning and every evening.

If you do not want to begin a new job or a new business, consider donating some of your free time to a decent cause. You could visit the elderly or the lonely in hospital. You could visit lonely individuals in the community or you could teach computers or gardening to those who want to learn. Join the Women’s Institute, Victim Support, visit prisoners or help out at one of the local institutions.

Learn something new. Have you always wished to be able to play the guitar, speak Spanish or use the Net? Well, now is your opportunity. There are usually day and night classes in these and other topics.

Travel more. All right, you might not have a lot of money, but you do have a bus pass (in many countries, anyway). You could set up a fortnight’s holiday using your bus pass for daily travel from guest house to guest house. You could write a book or simply read all those books that you have not had time to read over the last fifty years.

Creating Affiliate Websites (Part 2)

Saturday, July 10th, 2010

In the first part of this piece, we talked about creating affiliate marketing websites and how you ought to pick your products and plan your affiliate marketing website pages. The next stage is how to attract visitors (ie shoppers) to your affiliate marketing websites. Selling on the Internet is what they call a ‘numbers game’, which means that only a tiny percentage of surfers to your affiliate marketing websites will become customers, so the first goal is to get a lot of visitors. The second objective is to raise the conversion rate of surfers to shoppers.

The key to attracting visitors to your affiliate marketing websites is to have high quality content; consequently, this is the next task you must pay attention to in building your affiliate marketing websites. There may be several other factors that contribute to the success of your affiliate marketing websites, but high quality contents tops the list. This will be exactly the explanation why visitors select to visit your website. They want to get information and if they don’t find it on your website, they will go elsewhere.

As a result, you need to write attention-grabbing articles related to your theme as this will encourage them to come to your website more often. If you have previously looked for affiliate programs that match your site, add links to the business sites and other exceptional edifying websites. Links add to how highly you will be ranked in the most important search engines as well. In addition, build pages for the goods you are endorsing, but don’t just market the products by placing hyped-up ads.

Keep your readers engrossed by continually adding plenty of related and practical information. This will encourage them to click the links in your affiliate business sites and buy the goods. Remember that no good quality subject matter means no recurrent visitors, which means no sales and eventually, no fee.

Make your site simple although it must show a touch of class in order to make it appear more like a business website rather than a personal website. This should make it pleasant to the eye and consequently much more interesting to browse. To assist you with the layout, you could check out some of the successful online stores to get a better idea of how you can make your site come across better.

One hint is to ensure you don’t place too many banner ads on your affiliate marketing websites, since these might distract your site visitors and so, instead of clicking your ad, they might just leave your site and look for another, more relevant website. However, restricting the number of banners is not a problem, since banner ads are not the only means of marketing your products. After your website is completed, submit its URL to the most important search engines and lists to improve your traffic.

After all this, you need to continue learning. Learn about the use of keywords for search engine optimization and use them in your affiliate marketing websites’ subject matter. Refresh your affiliate marketing websites frequently and insert new webpages. Make sure to inform your shoppers about the latest updates to your affiliate marketing websites. You can use newsletters to do this. The Internet offers a huge resource of information about just about everything, make use of it. Keep on teaching yourself how to enrich your affiliate marketing websites and soon you?ll find yourself successful in affiliate marketing with websites.

Protect Your Home And Family

Friday, June 11th, 2010

Everybody worries about the security of their homes and families. The question is: how can you make your home safe without turning it into Fort Knox? The sad fact is that, if someone is determined to get into your home, they can and will. Ten years ago, my home was ‘safe’, but I was tricked into opening the door and I let my attackers in. No home security system can safeguard against situation like that.

Burglars look for homes that seem vulnerable. Most burglars are opportunistic. In other words, if they see an open door or window or if it is obvious that no one is at home and if there is no noticeable security, then it is worth them attempting to get in. Open gates are also an incitement. So are valuable possessions put on show in windows.

It only takes minutes to steal something, you would be astonished. I let two armed robbers into my house and they timed 15 minutes to take everything of value in my house and then a car stopped outside to pick them up. It was night time and I was tied up. It could have been a taxi, which would not have aroused my neighbours’ suspicion.

It is important to show people (opportunistic thieves) that you have a home security system of some type. If you cannot afford a proper, working alarm system, get a dummy siren box with a flashing light. It is not as good as a real system, but it would take a brave or desolate burglar to find out, which means that you cannot tell anyone at all, in case it gets out.

A home security system is well-worth the money you will spend on it. The stress of being burgled or even held up, like I was, will make you wish that you were more security conscious. But it does not stop when the burglars go away. Then the police come and I spent from midnight until 4AM at the police station. I had to go back at least a dozen times after that. My insurance company had dozens of queries and it took four months to get a disbursement.

I felt certain that the burglars knew me, and I felt threatened everywhere I went for months. I could not stop glaring into people’s eyes to see if I could recognize my intruders’ (they had masks on, but I saw one man’s eyes). My life has altered radically. I even moved out of my house the next day and never went back again.

As I said before, I had a decent system in situ, but I had turned it off when I got home and opened the front door to my burglars. My suggestion is to get a wired or wireless home security system and, if you can afford it, get a monitored home security system with at least one surveillance camera, but preferably one on each external wall and one inside in the hall.

Obtain contact sensors for all external doors and vibration sensors for all windows. Put a personal panic button by all external doors and have garden lights that are switched on by motion or body heat outside. Keep your system activated and be very suspicious of who you open the door to.

Retirement Investment Vehicles

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010

Retirement may be a long, long way off for you or it could be just immanent. matter how near or far away it is, you have definitely got to begin saving for it right now. However, saving for retirement isn’t what it once was with the increase in the cost of living and the instability of social security. Nowadays, you really have got to invest for your retirement future, as opposed to just saving for it!

We shall commence by looking at the retirement plan, which is offered by your company. Once upon a time, these plans were quite sound. However, after the Enron collapse and all the problems that followed, people aren’t as confident in their company retirement schemes anymore. However, if you decide not to invest in your company’s retirement plan, you do have other things you can do.

Firstly, you can invest in bonds, certificates of deposit, money market accounts, mutual funds and stocks in alphabetical order. You do not need to explain to anybody that the returns on these investments are to be used for retirement fund. Simply let your money grow over a period of time, and when an investment reaches its maturity date or value, reinvest it and continue to let your money grow.

You could also open an Individual Retirement Account (IRA). IRAs are quite popular because the money is not taxed until you withdraw the funds. You may also be able to deduct your IRA payments from the taxes that you pay. An IRA may be opened at most larger banks.

A ROTH IRA is a much newer type of retirement account. With a ROTH IRA, you pay taxes on the money that you invest into your ROTH IRA account, but when you cash it in, no federal taxes are owed. Roth IRAs can also be started at most of the larger financial institutions.

Another popular very kind of retirement account is the 401(k). 401(ks) are usually provided by employers, although you may be able to open a 401(k) on your own. You should speak with a financial advisor or an accountant to help you decide whether this is right for you or not.

The Keogh plan is another kind of IRA which is more suitable for self employed people. Self-employed small business owners may also be interested in Simplified Employee Pension Plans (SEP). This is another kind of Keogh plan that people typically find easier to administer than a regular Keogh plan.

Whichever retirement investment scheme you decide on, just make sure you do pick one! Again, do not depend on social security, company retirement plans, or even an inheritance which may or may not happen! Take care of your financial future by investing in one kind of investment right now.

If you or someone you know is approaching retirement, please go along to our website entitled Retirement and Pensions

The Importance Of Home Security

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010

People have always tried to protect themselves and their families, just like most animals do. In very early days, cavemen protected their caves by lighting fires outside the entrance to discourage interlopers and wild animals. Later on, man learned how to increase his security by training dogs to safeguard him and his family. Later still, houses and then doors were invented; bars and locks arrived soon after that.

However, until a few decades ago in the west, people lived in extended large families. A family could consist of six-to-ten children and the mother and the grandmother would often live there too. This made home security systems extraneous from the early 18th Century to the 1930′s, which were quite peaceful times. After the Second World War, families were not so large and new families got their own house away from their parents.

Nowadays, both parents are likely to be working and the children are probably at school. This means that many houses are left unoccupied during the day, making them easy plunder for burglars. In fact, the number of household burglaries has increased by almost 10% in the last five years according to American government figures. Furthermore, according to a survey, forty percent of home burglaries were carried out due to inappropriate locks and doors.

ANSI (American National Standard Institute) produced a standard for deadbolt locks for exterior doors which is very difficult to beat. If you are worried about your exterior doors, you should seek these ANSI deadbolts out, but beware, there are many copies. However, regardless of the kind of lock, the quality of the door is just as crucial. Its thickness and composition can also be a deterrent. After all, why put an expensive deadbolt on a door made of cardboard?

There are about 14,000,000 home burglaries each year in the United States and many of them are preventable. The first stage that you should achieve in home security is strong doors and strong locks. Deadbolts on exit doors is a good idea.

Once you have completed that, get some exterior security lighting that reacts to either motion or body heat. The former kind are microwave and the latter passive infra red sensors. These sensors will also contain a daylight sensor so that they will only become active at night. The sensors will also save you money by activating the powerful halogen floodlights only when someone enters the range of the sensor’s beam.

Once you have done that, you should think about a home security alarm system. This should include contact sensors on all exterior doors and windows, vibration sensors on all widows to alarm you in case of breakage and PIR or microwave motion sensors in the corridors and hallways.

Then, if you want to go even further in your home security system, you can install surveillance cameras on each exposed wall of the house and maybe one in the interior too. You do not have to take all these preventive measures at once, if you are short of cash, but they should be taken in that sequence.

Owen Jones, the author of this article, writes on many subjects, but is currently involved with home security systems comparison. If you are interested in Security Systems For Home Use, please click through to our site.

Monitored Home And Business Security

Saturday, May 29th, 2010

Many Americans are just starting to appreciate that advanced security measures are not only for the extremely rich. You just cannot get too much security for yourself and your family or your employees. The problems in society are getting worse too, not better. The current recession is hitting hard and splitting society even more into the have and have-nots, the working and the not-working.

However, these days criminals do not target the very wealthy, because they have all the protection that money can buy. The citizens most likely to be robbed and burgled are the working middle classes. They get robbed when they are at work and the kids are at school or when they are sleeping in their beds.

This is why it is necessary to have the best automated security you can afford taking care of your home and family twenty-four hours a day. But it is not only your home, your business and workers deserve security as well. How many gun-toting lunatics have shot their co-workers dead in the last few years?

Not many firms can afford security personnel but you could get the next best thing, which is electronically monitored surveillance. There are various types of system available and most are flexible enough to be adaptable to any building. You could then monitor the system yourself during working hours by having a screen in the office or your home and relay the signal to a security firm at other times of the day, at weekends and at night.

If you take on this sort of system, you will be placing your home or office in the top level of secured properties and professional thieves will realize it and avoid you and yours. Most people resent the monitoring fees, but the system falls down, if no-one is watching the image relayed by the cameras. You could try to reduce this cost by monitoring the images yourself for part of the day and switching the image to professionals when you are unavailable. You could also ask your insurance company for a discount and ask your accountant to put the cost down against your taxes.

The good thing about a monitored system is that you know that help is at hand twenty-four hours every day. You may be living alone or prone to fits or a heart attack. You could get almost instant help in these instances by pressing the panic alarm. These panic buttons can be placed at the front and back door, in every room in the house or you could have a radio button on a necklace around your neck. These systems are quite common and are used by many care centres for the elderly or the infirm.

You will probably have to do some arithmetic to discover whether you need or can afford a monitored home security system, but there is no doubt that it is the most secure system available. However, not all home security monitoring companies are the same, so it is worth checking up with friends or with the companies’ governing body or even the local council to see if they have a good reputation.

Owen Jones, the author of this writer, writes on many topics, but is currently involved with home security systems comparison. If you are interested in Security Systems For Home Use, please click through to our site.
