Choosing a new laptop can be a daunting task. There are so many different factors to consider. What software do you need? Which operating system will be best? How much hard disk space do you need? How fast a processor? How big a screen? If you want to guarantee that you get exactly the right laptop, you need to identify what you want and then stick to that, not getting distracted.
One major factor will be the size of the screen. Netbooks offer 8.9″ or 10.1″ screens, while larger laptops might have a 17″ or 18″ display. There are plenty of other sizes between these two extremes.
If you want a portable laptop for a bit of internet browsing and for checking your emails, you don’t need anything too powerful. A small netbook ought to be sufficient. Very small models such as the Dell Mini are light and suitable if you’re not planning on spending large amounts of time online or playing games.
In terms of mid-sized laptops, the Dell Inspiron 1545 is a good choice. This is a popular model with a 15.6″ screen. When it was first launched, it benefited from a huge advertising campaign and a low price and has since remained popular. Mid-sized laptops offer a good mix between work, entertainment and portability. These are the all-rounders, big enough to use for multimedia, but still small enough that you can easily carry them around.
Of larger laptops, many people go for the Dell Vostro 3700. With a 17.3″ screen, it is perhaps more geared towards gamers and people using design software, but it does allow you to have multiple windows open without your having to flick between them. Set against that is the fact that it is not quite so portable, due to its size.
If you ever need to replace a Dell laptop screen if yours is faulty or because the panel cracks, there are always options. Screen replacements are pretty easy to carry out, but it is still better to get someone to do it for you. A local repair shop should be able to carry out the work without too much trouble. Alternatively, there is plenty of advice on the internet if you want to try and do the job yourself.
