Little League Baseball: Training The Next Generation For The Big Show

Little League is a rite of passage for many young people in America. Aside from being our country’s pastime, it is an excellent institution of teamwork and acceptance. Everyone on the team strives toward a greater goal. There may be those who stand out, but they couldn’t possibly play every position on the field. Kids learn a great deal about themselves through team sports. They learn because they’re taught by coaches.

Little League coaches are frequently depicted in a negative way. Some people say that coaches are aggressive, that they have favorites and put kids under unnecessary pressure. There are always going to be the bad coaches, but these are few and far between. Most Little League coaches are decent and respectable individuals. Many are parents seeking to pass their knowledge of the game on to the younger generation, and many have day jobs in teaching, in offices, or as laborers. These people appreciate the value of team-working skills in later life and understand how important it is in today’s world to provide positive influences to young people.

Parents don’t really appreciate much of the hard work that a coach and his assistants put in to running a Little League. Coaches have to arrange the schedules for every game and practice session, put together the line-ups for every game and record every single pitch and hit. Many coaches even take the children out for pizza and ice cream after a game, whether the result has been good or bad. Coaches have an important role to play in helping the kids manage their emotions, as well as learning the valuable quality of patience.

Coaching is not easy, but it can be very rewarding. Coaches can develop valued relationships with the players and parents. Little League can provide children with structure in their lives and the opportunity to meet great friends. I met some of my own best friends through playing baseball, and these are still friendships I enjoy today. I recall my own time playing Little League with much fondness. I remember too that my coaches were excellent and gave me the drive to succeed.

As far as coaches go, many don’t know the impact they have on the kids. I distinctly remember the coach from one team flipping out at an umpire for a blown call. I remember thinking that the call was unfair, but it was just a game. Looking back, it makes sense that our team was calm and waiting out the other coach’s tirade while his team joined in the argument. It makes sense because our coach had always told us that baseball, at the end of the day, is just a game. What happens off the field is more important. Sometimes people have trouble remembering that.

All a Little League coach needs is a passion for the game and a desire to share that passion with others. Too many people who played Little League in their own childhoods, with big dreams of one day playing in the majors, now restrict their participation in baseball to sitting in the crowd as fans, or occasionally playing for their Beer League softball team. Rather than knocking back the beer, squeezing their out of shape bodies into uniforms, and reveling in past glory, they could be sharing their knowledge and helping children develop their baseball talent. This could really help those children who are naturally gifted in the sport but who don’t have the support to nurture their talent.

I suggest you go out into the community and see how you can get involved. Little Leagues even need announcers and concession stand managers. Maybe you can start out that way before moving on into coaching. Whatever your route, sharing your love of baseball will take you back to why you feel in love with the game in the first place. After all, why else do you shell out forty dollars a ticket to watch professional millionaires do what kids pay to be able to do?

Is It Time For A Bicycle Tune Up?

All bikes require a service at some time whether you use it regularly or not. If you do not use it, it probably needs more attention than if you do, but if you do use your bicycle a lot some aspects will require attention as well. In this article we will discuss some bicycle tune up tips that should put you ahead of the competition.

The first item to test is the chain. If the chain is not right, it will not convey all your leg power to the wheels – it will be inefficient and you will have to pedal harder. Not only that, but if the chain is not right, it can wear down the teeth on the cogs and they are a lot dearer to replace than the chain.

So, test the tension of the chain by jiggling it up and down from its standard place. It ought to move around a centimeter (less than half an inch) up and down from standard. If it is more than this, slacken the wheel nuts off and tap the wheel back to improve the chain tension. If the wheel will not go back far enough, you need a new chain. Chains do stretch over time.

Next, assess the bearings in the pedal mechanism. Do this with the chain off to reduce ambient noise. Turn the pedal arms and wiggle each one from side to side. Listen and feel for friction. The arms ought to not move from side to side at all, although the pedals may.

If the bearings are simply dry, shame on you, oil them, but if you have let it go too long and some bearings are damaged, replace them.

Examine your brake handles and cables. Replace anything that is cracked, broken or showing signs of rust. Check your brake pads. If they are worn out of shape, replace them and fit new ones so that they will wear more evenly.

If the pads are misshapen then they were not fitted in the correct manner so your brakes were not working well for a while which means that you were lucky that you did not need them in an emergency situation.

Once the brake pads have been fitted in the correct manner, recheck the tension of the cables operating them. Tighten or slacken them as necessary.

If you are still growing, check the height of the saddle and raise it if necessary. If you have stopped growing upwards, check that the saddle nut is tight enough to hold the saddle in position even if you hit a pothole.

Last but not least, make certain that your lights and reflector are working.

Of course, fuel-efficiency, among other aspects, depends on the bike. For those hotheads out there hoping to sit themselves down on a 2000+ CC beast, take a breath. Speed bike or cruiser, make sure you can handle the weight and height of your bike. Also be sure you don’t have a lead wrist when it comes to twisting that throttle. Ask around at the local dealers and get a sense of what type will be the best fit. For a first bike you may want to start out small, engine-wise, in order to gain some experience.

If you’ve done the training, got your equipment, convinced your loved ones and selected your motorcycle, then all that’s left to do is turn the key, step on the clutch and get on the road.
