Choosing The Right Camping Ground

Saturday, March 24th, 2012

When the weather turns fine, the minds of millions of people start thinking about a camping vacation. Once you have all your camping equipment and all your supplies, you will have to select a camping ground. It is safer to camp on a designated camping ground than just somewhere in the woods because of the danger presented by wild animals such as bears and stags. If you are going as a family, then you are better off with the washing facilities provided on a camping site as well.

The first thing to determine is where you want to go. Many people go only a few miles down the road from where they live, others choose to go to a favourite destination such as the Pocono Mountains. Unfortunately, it is not easy to gauge the quality of a camp ground from its telephone number and not all camp grounds are on line yet. Going to a poor camping ground can ruin your camping vacation, so it is worth checking the camping site on the Internet or asking to be sent a brochure.

Another good reason for viewing some advertising material is so that you can weigh up whether the on site facilities make the camping ground good value for money. Again there are no hard and fast rules, some people like to see a different show every night while others prefer to walk about or just sit and talk with neighbours or each other. If you are taking children, there should be something for them to do during the day such as organized nature rambles or and a swimming pool and other sports amenities.

Adult amenities should include fishing rights, boat hire facilities and nature trails and a swimming pool during the day, while at night, any shows that they put on should not be so loud as to spoil the effect of communing with nature for others. Many people leave the cities for a camping holiday in order to escape the noise, if you think like that, then make certain that you choose a camping ground that does not cater specifically to younger people who might want to dance and carouse all night.

In the same vein, if you have a young family and you as a parent love to go to the shows, are there baby sitting facilities available or is there at least a park warden who walks around the camp at night who could look in on your children every now and then?

Other amenities to look out for are shops, hairdressers and a first aid centre and the cost of using these facilities. Often the camp shops are a lot more expensive than similar shops in the local village, but do you really want to be going off site every time you want a loaf of bread or a six pack? Of course, you can take stuff with you but if you are going for a week or two, it is never sufficient and you are bound to forget something. A trip into a near by village every other day while visiting the attractions would be all right though, if there are any communities near by that is.

Stress And Heart Disease: Real Killers

Saturday, July 16th, 2011

Stress and heart disease are well-known to be closely linked. How many times have you seen someone undergo a stressful moment and die in films? This is not a joke – it one of the few times that films are telling the truth.

Of course, there are other causes of heart disease too: obesity and smoking to name but two, but stress can be the final nail in your coffin if you do not take care of yourself.

There are a number of things you can do to minimize the risk of stress and heart disease. These include taking more exercise, learning how to relax and not smoking.

Learn how to reduce your stress by other means than smoking and drinking and maybe you will not fall victim to stress and heart disease.

Financial stress is one the most common causes of stress and is also one of the most problematic to treat. The reason why financial stress is a problem to conquer is that if you actually care about your financial predicament, you are probably already doing everything that you can.

If you are already doing all you can to alleviate your financial situation and you are still suffering financial stress, then you will feel ensnared.

Office stress can build up very easily, but the causes are varied. Office stress can begin because you are worried about you career or because you think that you are an outsider. Office stress can also rear its ugly head because your supervisor is over-demanding or because you know that your job is beyond you.

There are methods of combatting office stress, but it is you who has to start the ball rolling.

A stress headache is a very real occurrence. In fact, it is reckoned that the majority of headaches are stress related. it is not for nothing, that |when people feel that they are losing it, that their hands go to their head.

Pain can be a result and this is almost certainly a stress headache. Frequently a stress headache will start with tension in the neck and shoulders and will change into pain in the temples, behind the eyes – this is a true stress headache.

The indications of stress take numerous forms and sometimes the reason for the stress dictates the indications of stress that the sufferer will experience. For instance. If the cause of the stress was an attack, then some of the indications of stress might be flashbacks and nightmares.

However, if the cause of your stress is job related, symptoms of stress might be psychosomatic illnesses so you can get a day off or you might suffer a non-existent feeling of rejection by your colleagues.

Wilderness First Aid Training

Monday, July 11th, 2011

A substantial part of First Aid training can be applied to a wide spread of circumstances, but there are also particular situations where specialist information is necessary. This is fairly straightforward to understand, because a bump or a scrape can happen under any circumstances, but phenol poisoning would almost certainly only happen in an industrial mishap.

There is not much point in learning how to help victims of specialist accidents if you are extremely unlikely to ever be able to apply that information. However, you ought to take advantage of each free or subsidized specialist course that you are offered at work. The same can be said for any pastime that you have, although you will almost certainly have to pay for the course yourself.

In this situation, I am thinking of swimmers, yachters, campers, hikers and people involved in sports or pastimes of that nature. After all, there is less point in knowing how to save a drowning person if your hobby is hiking or mountaineering. Knowing First Aid pointers in the wilderness is very helpful, but they are more likely to include, stroke, heart attack, broken bones and unconsciousness.

You are in essence on your own while you are in the outback or on a mountainside. If you are with a partner, all well and good, you are safer, but there is also two times the likelihood of an accident. However, there are more common causes for anxiety than actual physical accidents.

Some of the far more common problems that happen while you are wandering in some wilderness or other are exhaustion, dehydration and insect bites. If you are hiking in the winter or above the snow line, then there is also frostbite and hypothermia to take into account.

In general, there are also snake bites and bites from large animals to consider. Fractured bones due to a fall are quite common, so if you are planning a hike into the wilderness, you actually do have to be prepared, because, if your phone is receiving a signal and the battery is charged, it could still take hours for help to get to you.

If you have a fondness for wandering in the wilderness, the first thing to do is not go alone. Ensure that you go with someone who has more knowledge than yourself until you can honestly say that you are competent to lead someone else into a very perilous area where help is hours away by helicopter.

If you have learned how to go into the wilderness by partnering someone else, you ought to be all right. Another way of learning is to join the Scouts. Learning in this manner will give you plenty of time to pick up tips on how to handle exceptional situations.

Do not make believe that you are able to lead someone else if you do not have the experience. Being stuck tens of miles from anywhere in the dark with a fractured leg and no concept what to do is not going to impress anyone.

Finding Affordable Camping Equipment

Friday, June 17th, 2011

Camping is a very popular activity among the under Forties. People like to go hunting, fishing, hiking, walking or simply camping with their friends, family or lover. The outdoors is delightful and can be romantic. Lots of people want to get a little closer to nature and the easiest way of doing this is sleeping under canvas, or nylon or something man-made like that. Another benefit for the young is that it is inexpensive.

However, it is not merely inexpensive, it is healthy and instructive. All children should go camping either with their parents or the scouts in order to learn something of nature before they get locked into a career to pay the mortgage and forget that there is life outside the city. You know, there are inner city kids that do not know that milk comes from cows? How ridiculous is that?

So, if you are going to take an education in nature by the horns, you will have to have some camping equipment. Inexpensive though camping equipment is relative to the equipment required for other activities, most people still have to be a bit careful how much they spend.

If you fall into that bracket, then this article is for you. Before we get into the nitty-gritty, it is worth pointing out that if you have the money, you can do worse than simply going down to the local sports shop or camping shop and purchasing all your kit from them. Buy everything you need in one go and ask for a discount. if anything ever goes wrong they will remember you as a big spender and fix it for you straight away.

However, the remainder of have to be a bit more careful with the cheque book. If you know a bit concerning camping equipment from your parents or from the scouts and do not mind second-hand, then car boot sales and garage sales can be just the thing.

Frequently people are selling things because their kids have left home and they are having a clear out or perhaps they have had more children and the pup tent is no longer any use to them.

I sold a lovely tent not so long ago for peanuts because I knew that I would never need it again. The beauty of these sales is that you can put the tent up or get the seller to put it up for a closer inspection. Look for rot, sniff for mildew, check the number of pegs and guide lines et cetera, but do not get carried away with perfection, you can buy extra pegs, lanyard and a mallet, but you do not want to have to sew up holes or replace zips or fly screen.

Classified ads are another good source of equipment, but pick the item up yourself so that you know where to take it back if you do not have the opportunity to inspect it properly before handing over the money.

EBay and Amazon are also pretty decent, but you have to do some research on the manufacturers’ names and the standard retail prices otherwise you might end up buying a costly copy, a kiddies’ toy tent or simply junk.

One of my favourite stores to browse is the Army and Navy Surplus store. Try going into an A&N and coming out empty-handed. If the equipment in there is good enough for our troops to risk their lives with, it’s decent enough for a week in the Poconos.

Hiking And Camping

Monday, May 9th, 2011

Are you interested in getting closer to nature? Do you like hiking and sleeping under the stars – or under canvas at least? If you do, then a walking or hiking and camping holiday may be just the thing for you. A hiking and camping holiday will get you out in the fresh air, allow you to observe nature first hand and cost you very little to boot. In short, hiking and camping are the perfect blend, if you are looking for a healthy, inexpensive break outdoors.

Not just that but you can either go alone with a couple of good books, take a lover, take a friend or take the family with you. All in all, you have many alternatives available to you if you want to trek off into the wild blue yonder by foot.

There are a few of ways of approaching a vacation of this sort. You can either book into a hiking and camping site or you can literally just head off. If you have children with you then the camping ground is a necessity, but otherwise the decision is yours, although it has to be kept in mind, that camping off site is or can be illegal. Trespass is definitely illegal as is causing a nuisance of yourself, putting wild animals under duress for no decent reason, damaging trees or property and littering.

So, if you are new to hiking and camping, you will probably be better off going to a hiking and camping site or park. Do not be put off by this idea, some of them are truly immense. Check out the Poconos and other national parks for instance.

There is no doubt that cost is a factor in the choice of a camping holiday for many young people, but it is rarely the sole reason why people like to get away and sleep under the stars. Getting back to nature and bird- and animal-watching are other everyday reasons.

If you are interested in this type of vacation, it is worth remembering that hiking and camping have become highly popular pastimes of late. They always were well-liked, it is a fact, but they waned in the Eighties and Nineties, and are seeing a renaissance now. Therefore, do your homework, see where you would like to go, get some brochures or look on line and book up early. Yes, nowadays you have to book up early to get into the best hiking and camping sites again.

A final note of warning, if you decide to go off into the wilderness outside a park, let people know where you are. Take your mobile phone and a couple of fully-charged extra batteries and say when you are going to phone in that you are safe and make sure that you abide by it. It is very costly if Air-Sea Rescue get called out on unnecessarily.

I’m In Love With A Mule

Sunday, November 14th, 2010

I am reminded why living in California is so desirable now that the rainy, cold days of winter have been replaced by the pleasant temperatures of spring . The hillsides are cloaked in vibrant green grass and dotted with mustard flowers. Our beaches are impeccably clean and belong to the locals while they are still too chilly for water sport seeking tourists. On the horizon stand our snow capped mountains that reflect the peachy-pink sunsets and velvet blue night skies. It is beautiful countryside.

. We have delighted in spur-of-the-moment picnics in meadows flanking Ortega Highway and quick trips to Big Bear to engage in snowball fights. We have spent evenings at the beach roasting marshmallows after fatiguing days spent peddling our beach cruisers back and forth on the boardwalk between the Huntington, Newport and Balboa Piers, Yes, life is good.

We pack an arsenal of supplies for each of these little journeys. No trip is complete without lip balm, munchies, cans of pop, water bottles, Frisbees, a deck of cards, blankets and beach towels.

Of all these little necessities, my most beloved is the Ice Mule. My husband picked up our Mule at a hunting/fishing outlet (which is funny because he would never hurt a fly). Thinking it was something we could use one day, he brought it home. He was right.

This remarkable cooler bag has kept our refreshments icy cold for extremely long periods of time. In fact, I recently realized that it had been left in our SUV overnight and was not looking forward to removing the deviled eggs that surely would emit offensive fumes upon removal from their Tupperware tomb. To my delight the eggs and the water bottles inside the Ice Mule were still nice and cold, even though they had been in the bag for over 24 hours!

Now I take the Ice Mule with me to the grocery store. I transfer the cold items into my Mule and continue my errands around town before returning home. I truly love this thing!

It won’t be long now till the beaches become jam-packed, noisy meccas for the tourist traffic and the grassy green countryside will turn golden brown. . Tourists will be looking for parking spots nearest to the beach (hint, these don’t exist in the summer) and traffic on Pacific Coast Highway will be reduced to a snail’s pace.

When we do feel brave enough fight the crowds, you can bet that our Mule will be with us to keep our drinks, munchies, sun tan lotion and temperaments cool. Yes, it will soon be time to relax by the pool with our diet sodas, frozen yogurt and lemonade as the temperature climbs past 90 degrees. To minimize effort during the lazy days of summer, I am planning on using my Ice Mule poolside, even though the kitchen will only be a few feet away. In fact I might not leave my lounge chair all summer long.

Where To Buy Your Camping Equipment From

Thursday, November 11th, 2010

Do you like to go camping? Do you go with friends or family and do you help with the planning? If so, then you almost certainly already have a lot of the items you require, but as you doubtless already know, there is always something you have to purchase for each trip. If you are planning your first trip, then it is to be hoped that this short piece will give you some tips.

In fact, there are quite a few sources of camping gear. Some offer better value for money than others, some offer low quality gear and others offer high quality at high prices. The trick is to be somewhere in the middle, where you can get good quality equipment which is fit for purpose at the correct price and this is what we will help you to do.

One of the first points to comprehend, and it is very useful to understand this , is that a camper needs camping gear, ie the tent, sleeping bag, et cetera and camping supplies, ie food, insect repellent et cetera. It is helpful to realize the difference because some camping shops sell both gear and supplies, whereas others just sell one or the other.

Starting with camping gear. You can buy camping gear on line at dedicated camping stores, at department shops and at eBay and Amazon. The trick here is to do some research first to find out what is the best of what you need and how much it costs and then to go searching on line for that particular item manufactured by that particular manufacturer. You will certainly save money by buying on line, but you have to be more wary of imitations.

Army and Navy Surplus stores are pretty decent too. After all, if it is decent enough for our fighting forces it is not going to fall apart the first time it rains or blows a bit. I have always found it difficult to come out of an army and navy store without buying anything, even if they did not have what I went in there for. I always end up buying a new compass or a knife or some other gizmo.

Department shops are next and you can pick up decent deals out of season, otherwise they tend to be costly and you have to be cautious of not buying ‘kiddies gear’ meant for use in the back garden by mistake. Sports shops and dedicated camping stores are usually very reliable, selling the best gear at the top prices.

Now on to camping supplies. To be honest, what do you eat while camping that you do not eat at home each week? Moose, squirrel, possum, deer? Well, you are not going to take that with you anyway, are you, so you may as well get your camping supplies from your favourite supermarket.

Or you can go to the camping shop and pay over the odds for ‘specialist foods’ and ‘survival rations’, but again, to be honest, you would be better off acquiring items like that either on line or at the Army and Navy store again. If you want to try out some of these army rations, it can be fun, but get them at bargain prices from the A&N.

Find The Perfect All Purpose Cooler

Wednesday, November 3rd, 2010

There are coolers, usually a variety of coolers, in almost every garage. People buy them quickly at Wal Mart with very little forethought, when they’re on their way out with food or drinks. If you’re like me, though, you never seem to have the right kind of cooler handy. I have one that’s a perfect size, but it doesn’t keep drinks cool for very long. Another one keeps things cold for a long time, but it’s huge, partially because its insulation is so think. I have a small lunchbag size cooler, but it leaks if it tips over.

True outdoorsmen take the time to find a cooler that meets all of their needs, but these super coolers are available to everyone. Even if you don’t spend days at a time in the great outdoors, these high quality coolers will be better for your day to day needs than the ones you probably have now. Here are some things you should look for to get a cooler that will work for you in every situation.

Probably the most important feature is the cooler’s ability to keep things cold for a long time, especially if it’s hot out. This is all about the insulation. It used to be that thicker insulation meant that things would stay cold for a longer time or under hotter weather conditions. This is still true to some degree, but fortunately there have been many advancements in insulation. Manufacturers of cooler have newer more advanced types of insulation material available. One of the greatest advancements is better use of space. You can get a lot of insulation effectiveness with less mass than ever before. Some types of insulation are flexible, so some modern coolers can be rolled up or folded. You’re looking for a cooler that is lightweight and takes up as little space as possible, yet still has enough insulation to keep your things cold for a long time.

There are two ways to cool things – with ice or without. There are coolers available that offer something similar to refrigeration. The air inside is cooled without ice. Usually these require some kind of power, whether electric or battery. This type of cooling system is often used in places like homes and offices that have a reliable source of power. For an on-the-go cooler, ice is almost always the better choice. It keeps things, especially drinks, ice cold. Ice is readily available and inexpensive almost anywhere you go. Snow or even cold water from a river can be used in a pinch. It can be easily disposed of anywhere when it has melted. The only down-side to ice is that it can make some of your items soggy as it melts. This is easily solved by putting your food in Ziploc bags in the cooler.

Of course ice can also leak if your cooler gets tipped over. This isn’t an ice problem. It’s a cooler problem. If your cooler leaks when turned upside down, keep looking for a new cooler. A cooler should seal everywhere to prevent water leakage and to prevent warm air from getting in and warming up your food and drinks.

Soft sided cooler have become much more popular recently. Take full advantage of this opportunity by getting a cooler that gets smaller when you have less inside it and completely rolls up when empty.

Last on the list is durability. Be sure you select a well made product that is going to last through many excursions.

One bag cooler that meets all of these criteria is the Ice Mule. It was designed like a dry bag, so nothing, not even water, gets in or out once it’s sealed. Read more about the insulated backpack cooler.
