The Best Things About Cruising The Mediterranean

Tuesday, July 5th, 2011

Are you thinking of going on a cruise this year? If you have never been on a cruise before you certainly ought to try one and if you have been on a cruise before you could have a go at cruising the Mediterranean this time

Cruising at sea, calling into a different port each day or two soon becomes a way of life, so short cruises can be a little exasperating. A fortnight is all right but a month is much better.

Think of it, a different language and a different culture every day for weeks! The Mediterranean Sea is not considered to be a large sea, but it must be the most diverse region in the world, because there are countries like Portugal, Spain and France to the northwest; the Middle East is represented by Turkey and The Lebanon in the northeast; Arabic countries like Egypt and Lybia line the northeastern coast of the African Mediterranean and Arabic/Berber countries like Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco bring us back to within miles of Spain on the northwestern African Mediterranean litoral.

In fact, the Mediterranean Sea covers about 2.5 million square kilometres and has over 120 large seaports around it. The variety of food, culture and language is pretty extraordinary. If you are searching for variety, you will absolutely find it when cruising the Mediterranean Sea.

If you get a kick out of history, then you will not be disappointed by the ruins from the immense Greek, Roman and Egyptian empires that spread around the region prolifically. I should not think that there is a single area without something to remind the population about the power of the Roman army 2,000 years ago.

There are dozens of different Mediterranean cruises available many of them specializing in one specific aspect or region of the Mediterranean. Some go for romantic destinations others specialize in Greek, Roman or Egyptian history.

The last Mediterranean cruise I went on was essentially two cruises back-to-back. I flew into Barcelona from my home town. I did not have to take care of my luggage from my hometown until I saw it on my bunk on the cruise liner. That was a great touch. On the first part of the cruise we steamed east to Sicily and then north along the Italian coastline to the French Riviera and returned to Spain.

The second leg went east to Sardinia and then south to Africa and returned along the coast calling into Tunisia and Malta on the way back to Spain. They were two completely different cruises on the same ship and separated merely by a week from one another.

The luxury and the dining experience was wonderful and I discovered the saying to be a fact that you can expect to gain about a pound in weight every two days unless you take lots of exercise, so make sure you pack your swimming costume, even if you do choose to leave your exercise gear at home.

100 Years Of Swimwear

Tuesday, July 5th, 2011

Whilst you are putting your bathing suit on and heading for the water, the grass or the sand, have you ever given a thought to those generations who came before you? While you are sitting there in your swimming trunks or bikini, spare a thought for those who have worn a swimsuit before you through the ages. The history of the swimsuit and the history of women’s swimwear in particular is fascinating

We are so lucky these days in the West to be free of the shackles of the disapproval of society regarding beachwear and swimming costumes, because it still goes on in the Muslim and Asian world. They see our simple approach to near nudity as disgraceful, but so did our fore-fathers and particularly our fore-mothers.

But there was a weird duality in their reprobation. I have seen photos of female bathers in the latest fashion designs taken around about 1900 where nipples are plainly visible, but the legs were covered in stockings. These are clearly family photos and not pornography, which was rife then as well.

The history of bathing suits through the ages (in the Developed world) for both men and women has seen a reduction in the amount of clothing society needed to see for a person to stay good. This varied from country to country and from religion to religion, but with the exception of the Islamic faith, the tendency has been the same – towards less.

The less the better.

For example, in 1905 a lady’s bathing costume was really a short dress made up of ten yards of material, but by 1945 that yardage had shrunk to one yard. Nowadays some women’s swimwear is made from a couple of square feet.

The same is true of men’s swimwear fashion. A hundred years ago, the normal swimwear fashion for men dictated that they wore leotards in the water, whereas stylish swimwear in the late 1930′s was trunks.

In the Seventies, they wore scanty speedos and now we are back to trunks, although some beaches permit men to wear thongs like ladies can. Such are the vagaries of contemporary beachwear and swimwear style as dictated by politics and fashion.

In 1917, women wore a knitted sweater, a skirt, bloomers, black stockings and even shoes on the water’s edge. Men did not have to wear stockings or shoes, but their leotard usually came down to their knees.

In the following years, fashion saw hemlines on women and men rising, but bathing costumes were still down-beat, unsexy dark colours. The emphasis was not to look sexy, although numerous photos taken at that time reveal that both sexes were going through a sexual revolution. They had never seen so much of each other outside the bedroom.

This was the time when lots of our grand parents were born so it is the history of their parents’ sexual liberation. In the West, we can hardly start to imagine what it must have been like in those times ‘when a glimpse of stocking was something shocking’ and men ‘would rather hang around Piccadilly Underground, looking at the ankles of the fine-born ladies’.

Nowadays, you can find beaches all over Europe where (semi) nudity is allowed, and increasingly so in America and Asia. The only bastions of modesty are the Muslim countries of northern Africa and Eastern Asia, but after recent events such as the Arab Awakening, how long is that likely to last?

Scuba Diving And Snorkeling Vacations

Tuesday, June 28th, 2011

Numerous individuals who get pleasure from scuba diving and snorkeling pick their vacation destinations with their leisure pursuit in mind. Some of the top vacation destinations for scuba diving and snorkeling are the Caribbean, Mexico, the Mediterranean and Thailand. Most individuals like to go to view the aquatic wildlife, which means that the water has to be relatively clear.

Most divers like to look for marine animals and scenery, whilst others like to look for wrecks. As it happens fish and plants like to inhabit wrecks too because they offer protection from predators.

So diving wrecks offers excitement and the opportunity to observe wildlife. However, there is the added excitement of treasure hunting.

If you like the idea of diving wrecks and looking for artefacts and treasure, you need to know that wrecks are perilous, because you can be caught on railings, trapped in rooms or even get your oxygen line cut by some sharp edge, causing you to come up too quickly, which could give you the bends.

Not just that, but it is frequently illegal to go treasure hunting on wrecks that are not in international water (that is, more than fifteen miles off shore) and that normally means deep water where there is little chance of you being rescued if you become a cropper. Diving wrecks without a guide is a very dangerous business indeed.

However, most countries where scuba diving and snorkeling are well-liked vacation pastimes also have diving clubs, schools and instructors on the beaches or linked with the better hotels.

For example, in Thailand, there are literally hundreds of diving schools for holiday makers in Pattaya, Phuket, Hua Hin, Ko Samui and Pi-Pi. You can either approach one of these clubs yourself or ask your hotel to suggest one.

Most of the diving schools in these popular seaside resorts in Thailand are run from bars by ex-pats, but this does not mean that they are not completely professional. People like to dive in the warm sea in the morning and early afternoon and then retire to the bar to eat something and plan the next day’s journey. Most of these bar-diving schools either have their own boats or share a boat with friends.

Membership is normally free or it may be a nominal amount in order to comply with local laws, but it is unlikely to cost over $10 for a fortnight. If you do not have your diving equipment with you, you can normally rent it or if you have never been diving before, you can earn your basic diver’s certificate during your holiday.

Numerous divers use the diving trail to see southern Thailand. The destinations that I mentioned above are not very far apart. You could drive it in a hire car, travel in a bus during the night from one to the other or fly from one resort to the next in 30-40 minutes. Car hire, VIP bus travel and internal flights are fairly cheap in Thailand.

Good Reasons For Having A Vacation In Hawaii

Sunday, June 12th, 2011

If you are planning your summer vacation and you are looking for somewhere where you can strip down to your bathing costume and swim all day and merely worry about it becoming too hot, not overly cold, then you should add a vacation in Hawaii to your short list.

A vacation in Hawaii is thought to be very costly because of the high profile it has in films and TV series like ‘Hawaii 5-0′, but it is possible to find fairly reasonable holidays in Hawaii, if you do a little research. Search the Internet for last minute package deals and if that fails, try putting together your own holiday from various cut-price components.

You may be pleasantly surprised how much it costs to have a vacation in Hawaii compared to a comparable one in say, St. Croix, Barbados or even Florida. Look for actual hotels or guest houses in areas that are just outside the tourist traps and you will almost certainly get a better price. Many of these hotels have their own web site and so offer seasonal or last minute discounts directly to private customers.

Hawaii is one of the most beautiful regions in the area and indeed in the world. The coast is famous for its natural beauty – the swimming and diving are legendary, but the land off the coast is beautiful as well, if you like walking, riding or driving by jeep. There are magnificent volcanoes, waterfalls and forests.

Hawaii has been turned into a paradise for sports people of all kinds. There is very little that you could choose to do and cannot on Hawaii. There is ample chance for most land, sea and air sports ranging from mountaineering, to diving to hang-gliding. You can rent Jeeps, mountain bikes, yachts and even a helicopter.

Most people take a vacation in Hawaii for water sports such as swimming, diving, snorkeling, fishing and water skiing, but power boating and yachting or simply sailing a dinghy is common enough too.

There are also many natural and manufactured historical sights to see on all the islands, but the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on Big Island is just about the most well-known although most of the smaller island such as Kauai, Lanai, Maui, Molokai and Oahu all have their attractions too. It is just a case of reading up on Hawaii before you go and trying to select a hotel in a spot that makes your interests easily available.

There are lots of web sites and books on Hawaii to help you with your research, but you can also travel around easily once you get there, so that you could have a week on one island and a week on another offering different hobbies as a specialty.

This can all be arranged quite easily if you put your tour together yourself, but it may be more awkward if you attempt to patch two package vacations together. You will not regret your vacation in Hawaii whether you go alone, with the family or as part of a group.

LED Lights: The Future Of Lighting

Monday, November 8th, 2010

LED stands for light emitting diode. LED’s are not new, they are the tiny red or green lights on the front of your stereo that tells you that the power is on. Some set-ups have quite a few of them to indicate the state of preparation of the equipment. However, there is a new wave of interest in LED lighting by manufacturers. There is talk of LED’s being the future of lighting. In fact, there always has been these rumours about LED’s, but nothing ever appeared to come of it.

This renewed interest in LED lighting started in 2004 when vehicle manufacturers took another look at using LED lights in car headlamps. In 2008, Lexus produced the first ever car, the Lexus 600, with LED headlamps. These cars were exported all over the world except for North America. However, the 600′s headlamps were or are not true LED headlamps, the main beam is produced by filament bulbs.

The first authentic LED headlamps were fitted to the Audi V10 R8 sports car also in 2008 and the first American car was the Cadillac Esplanade Platinum in 2009. However, there is an inherent problem with high power LED lighting, the back of the diode produces a lot of heat. In fact, a group of high power LED’s produces sufficient heat to damage itself and melt the headlamp housing.

There are ways around this using heat sinks and cooling fans, but these answers are not perfect, so technicians and scientists are still searching for ways to resolve this problem. Conversely, the front of the LED lights creates almost no heat at all, so if there is vapour in the headlamp unit and the ambient temperature is below freezing point, then ice crystals will form over the LED’s distorting and dampening the rays of light.

All the same, scientists are sure that these teething problems will be overcome and that LED lighting will one day be the most inexpensive type of lighting to use. In fact, it is already very inexpensive to use and the LED lights units themselves last a long time. It is just the issue of overheating.

Other than their use in car headlamps, LED lighting units can be seen in flashlights and in other parts of cars. Manufacturers are using LED lights more and more often in brake lights, flashing indicator lights and hazard warning lights, because there is no problem at all with these fairly low powered LED lights.

LED lights used to be either green or red, but now it is available in more colours. White and blue are common. The coloured lights that you see under some cars are another example of LED lighting. They serve the useful purpose of making the car of motorbike more highly visible. All right, that may not be why they were fitted, but nonetheless they increase the vehicles’ visibility.

Many more uses will be found for LED lights over the coming years. You will find incandescent bulbs and even fluorescent tube lighting being phased out in favour of LED lights as the issues are surmounted, because LED lighting is still in its early years.

Owen Jones, the author of this piece writes on various subjects, but is currently concerned with LED automotive lights. If you would like to know more, please go to our website at Escort 8500.

Automatic Identification Systems On Vessels

Friday, June 11th, 2010

An Automatic Identification System, or AIS, is a device that helps to identify boats and vessels by sending out a continuous VHF signal that transmits basic information about that vessel such as its name, locations, type, & call sign.

The transponded information can then be received by other vessels to help them to determine its course and speed. As the VHF signals come in, the receivers are able to display all AIS-equipped vessels that are transmitting within a certain range. The system therefore provides a highly valuable service to water vessels in helping to track the progress of other watercraft in the nearby area. This decreases the chances of collision on the waterways. . The data that is received by other AIS-enabled vessels is most of the time shown on a computer display or positioned as an overlay on a chart plotter. This will help to confirm radar readout.

Ship navigators utilize AISAIS as a navigational tool to reduce the risk of collision and to chart a safe course to travel. Maritime search and rescue operations can be made much easier by automated identification devices that will specify the exact location of the distressed vessel regardless time of day or the weather conditions.

Dangerous situations can be avoided by programming the system to track specific vessels. This information can be exchanged automatically by the ships captains allowing for safer navigation. Ships with over 300 tons of cargo & all passenger ships are required by the International Maritime Organization to be fitted with the marine guidance system. People who use recreational boats are not required to use it, however more people are using the technology. All over the world, it is thought to be used in over 40,000 vessels.

This maritime technology is used primarily to avoid collisions. The tracking does not work alone. VHF radio communications can be limited and considering the fact that every vessel isn’t required to have it, it is not the perfect solution. It is not an automated collision avoidance system as defined by the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGS). In the hands of a skilled captain however, it is one of many tools utilized for safe travel.

During sea navigation, identifying other ships in the area is crucial for captains to make the best decisions on any voyage. That also does not mean that all other types of navigational observation is thrown away. There is certainly, of course, visual observation where the captain will often make use of binoculars to spot far away obstacles or boats. There can also be acoustic observational alerts that a captain must pay attention for such as horns, whistles, or VHF broadcast. Finally, there is radar or Automatic Radar Plotting Aid (ARPA) that can provide important navigational data to add to what the AIS is plotting. Despite having all this technology, accidents can still occur. It is often because of time delays and limitations of radar or even just plain human error whenever this occurs. The graphical charts and all the other observational tools must be utilized if water travel is to be safe and AIS is a small part of that.

An Understanding Of Radio Frequency Identification System

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

RFID is not a new technological innovation. It has been around for many years and it has by no means stopped broadening its application ever since the 1940s. Radio Frequency Identification or RFID is actually a multi-component solution. Components consist of mini transponders, readers, as well as present day computer software that set off a continuous feed of data.

An internal circuit and antenna are essential in every RFID transponder. The IC is implanted with an electronic product code (EPC) rendering it unique among the remaining tagged items worldwide. When the label is within range of an RFID scanning device, information about the tagged article is sent out over the antenna to the scanner, providing data to a processing device.

RFID technology was initially applied for military applications in World War 2. Subsequently, it’s been utilized in various fields. It became a real help in travel. automotive, shipping, security, not to mention a number of other business applications.

Even though it was thought of as a wireless bar coding device, RFID is much better by far. Scanning with RFID transponder remains reliable even if obstacles stand somewhere between the item and the detector. Additionally, these transponders can scan an item as much as 90 feet.

RFID is an independent determination system. This determination approach functions without human supervision. It’s also able to track a lot of IDs simultaneously and continues to be accurate in identifying the items.

As a rule, RFID systems are categorized in 2 ways. The first kind springs from its storage and recovery benefits: Read-only or Read-write and Passive or Active land sources. The following is dependant on the frequency it employs: Low Frequency, High Frequency, or Ultra-high Frequency.

Read-only labels are only able to acquire stored data say for example a product description and so on. Most of these systems can easily simplify fabrication and distribution schemes. Read-write tags in contrast are purposefully designed to both interpret and input data.

In a passive method, an RFID scanner gives off a power field that triggers and powers the tag. Without a scanning device inside 90 feet, the ID could not render any data. A passive method isn’t as helpful and is rather inferior when it comes to reliability than a dynamic system.

A dynamic system has batteries implanted in tags to aid in the transmittal of information between tag and scanner. Dynamic techniques tend to be more advanced than passive systems and scans bigger ranges. They’re also equipped with extra features like thermal scanners and definitely have a lengthier life span.
